Cochin was the colonial term used by the British in the early days. Kochi was the term used by the local townsfolk in the region and it eventually went on to be the official name in the 90s.
Another iconic sight that you simply cannot miss while traversing the coastal stretch as part of your Kochi sightseeing experience are the one-of-a-kind fishing nets you would have never seen elsewhere. These nets are called Cheenavala - which translates to Chinese nets. Believed to be introduced to the local fishermen by Chinese traders during the rule of Kublai Khan, these structures are huge bamboo poles with nets tied to one end and dip and rise from the waters.
